ALL ABOUT YONKERS - Fourth largest city in New York State, largest city in Westchester County, home to several attractions: Yonkers Raceway, Empire City; four Hudson Line Metro North stations, several Harlem lines on or near cities border.....
Yonkers was founded in 1646 by Adriaen Van der Donck, whose title of "Jonkheer" (Dutch for "young gentleman") stuck as the city's name.
It became a center for industry in the 1800s and is the birthplace of the FM radio, the safety elevator and the elevated train. Dubbed the “City of Gracious Living” for its fine neighborhoods, Yonkers has a population of about 200,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city in New York State.
The city encompasses 18.3 square miles and boasts four and a half miles of waterfront and a hilly landscape that afford visitors some of the most beautiful views in the New York City metropolitan area.
While it is only minutes from all that New York City has to offer, Yonkers has many fine attractions itself, including the Hudson River Museum, Philipse Manor, the 1740 Sherwood House and the Yonkers Police Museum. Among the city's cultural offerings are the Yonkers Hudson Riverfest, the Untermyer Performing Arts Festival, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra and the Yonkers Male Glee Club.
